Hi. I make maps, wrangle data, and do other stuff too. I am a cartographic designer and applied researcher at the U.S. Geological Survey. I earned my Ph.D. in the Department of Geography at Penn State. In my dissertation, I evaluated microaestheticsthe variations of letterform elements, like the shape of the capital J tailwithin a framework to determine the semantic effect (a.k.a personality) of typefaces for cartographic use. In 2012 I earned a Masters of Science degree in Geography from Penn State. My two masters papers were about 1) the effect of certain visual variables on change detection in dynamic point symbols; and 2) the influence of topology on event segmentation in 2D animations. For fun, I like to read books about British history, look at good typography, and bake cake. |
